Beatty Street traders face new competition

Or maybe a nice Gloria Jeans.

One of the undoubted joys of Armadale in general and Beatty Avenue in particular is the lack of mainstream, corporate, cookie cutter franchise stores. It’s nice to have a quiet pocket of shops with character.

It’s why people choose to shop here. It’s why we pay so very much to live here. But it’s going to change.

Not ony does Lend Lease’s new plan include multiple towers overlooking the shops but it also includes a plaza to be located in what is now the carpark right next to magnificent Toorak Station. Who knows what shops will fill the space? Characterful or corporate?

And who knows what the competition will do to traders’ tills? And let’s not even talk about what thousands of daily car trips in the area will do for business. Traders have as much to lose as residents.
